This dock scene is based on concept by “Splash Damage”. I took the project in a sci-fi direction as the concept art leaves a lot of room for personal interpretation. The vignette consists of mainly mesh with a BSP wall and floor. All Assets and lighting were created by me in Maya, Mudbox, Photoshop and displayed in the Unreal Engine.
Shanty Town is the First level that i can call exclusively “My Level”. On this level i created 90 to 95% of the assets, working everything from the terrain materials and particles all the way up to the sky dome. When creating the level we were really interested in creating a level that felt different from the rest of our game in feel as well as in game-play. Shanty town is a very CQB (close quarter battles) oriented level. The “shanties” themselves were constructed from materials that the residents scrounged up and pieced together into homes.
I was responsible for creating meshes to populate areas that were partially built but lacked the “lived-in” feel. I created everything from props, accent pieces and decals to BSP and repeatable textures for use on the BSP structures. The remainder of my time was spent working with level designers and new artist helping to create play-spaces that made sense and were structurally believable.
